What can we do as towing & recovery operators to bring awareness of slow down move over law?
By wearing reflective clothing while on the side of the road, makes you more visible to oncoming traffic.
Many of our friends and family are not involved in roadside work but by bringing awareness of the SDMO law, and the danger that comes in risking ones life while working on the side of the road, can bring more awareness.
Many towing operators have bragged about throwing lug wrenches to oncoming traffic. By doing these criminal acts, you are not solving the problem when you are putting others lives in harms way.
Have you ever considered coming together in your community with your local trash pickup, emergency personnel, DOT, roadside assistance, landsurveyors, etc and put together a non-political rally to bring the SDMO law awareness to your community. By maybe showing real time fatalities, videos, photos, etc it can show them that they can be prevent such a fatality just by moving over in the line of traffic away from road side workers.
Does your company have a social media policy in place? Did you know that not only your friends and family can see the things you post on social media? Your customers, new contracts, etc can also locate these things on the world wide web, it is open for all to see. So please be aware of what you post on social media. It can be your biggest advertisement for your company.
Tow Eye Suggestions: We now know a better way for Light Duty Towing with Luxury Vehicles.
We highly suggest & promote BA Product's Low Profile Exotic Strap also known as Tesla Strap. This straps has a low profile hook and allows only the soft strap material to come in contact with the vehicle to prevent damage as it allows to pull the car up into position to be tied down by its wheels.
If you use a tow pin, we highly suggest using a catch strap or some use a round sling, You would typically use the catch strap or round sling in case the tow eye fails.
If you are using a tow eye, you should consider coming down to the tow eye with a snatch block, take the cable to the back & far corner of the same side which is the passenger side of the vehicle. Normally, what this does by using the snatch block, it creates a 2 part line, which reduces the tension line. But we arent using it for that reason, we are using it to center the pull.

I want to motive the towing industry because the perception is so unfair, you all work very hard everyday and in the public eye many times we are percieved the wrong way, most of the time.
As the president of American Towing & Recovery Institute. I am trying to help the towing companies change that image. I don't believe it will ever happen by just flipping a switch but I think we need to take steps toward making the image a more positive one.
First step I want to start with is, I want to challenge every towing company to support your local fire department especially the volunteer fire departments but paid fire departments need support too. They love getting a few cars & using them for practice. Its good for everyone in your community - they all travel these roads but its good for your fire department in your area to be up to speed. If you give them a couple cars and I dont mean stripped from catalytic converters or no tires - they dont find them in wrecks that way so in order for them to use them in exercises they need them as a whole not a shell. Please keep in mind when you give them a couple cars, do it with no strings attached. If you speak to your accountant, I am pretty sure you can use it as a tax write off. So you get a warm fuzzy feeling in your heart and you are giving back to your community.
By taking this step and getting involved with your fire department, you may find that cross training between you and the fire personnel leads into a great community effort. Since the turn of the century, fire personnel developed one of NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) standards for fire & towing personnel. Ron Moore & I developed a course for towing & fire personnel working together in a cross training course in 2001-2002, so definitely not a new concept in our industry. Here is a link to an article that Ron Moore wrote about the relationship of fire & towing personnel for Fire House Magazine in which he has written for what I believe to be 30 years, we have permission to post it here. So maybe print it out and take it to your local fire department, donate a couple cars & see what you can do to work together in your community.,.. this is a huge step in moving the towing industry image into a positive one.

This week's episode - Wes is handling it solo with DJ as he is out of the studio. And interviews Pete Ashenden, Jr. He operates for Puryear Towing in NC and also is an associate trainer for The American Towing & Recovery Institute. Wes & Pete discuss lots of background history of where Pete came from and how he started in Towing.
Just prior to Petes interview, Wes talks about the Florida Tow Show. Its hard to believe it is less than a month away. The class Wes & ATRI will hold on Saturday, April 9th is free however pre-registration has been closed. They will open it up to a few the morning of the class. Class begins at 9 am, so if you happen to be at Hilton come by Staple Room to see if there are any more seats. Obviously, social distancing is in effective so make sure to check it out before its is full. Throughout the tow show we will also have a booth in Palm Hall. It will be easy to find out, just come through the entrance, take a left and we are all the way at the end to the right, booth #210-213.
Welcome back! Episode 8 is continuation of episode 7. So perhaps if you have not already listened to episode 7 - do yourself a solid and listen so that episode 8 makes sense.
....
What did you think of episode 7? Still a solo of Wes without DJ. But he has good friend and training associate, Pete Ashenden, Jr. Wes makes mention of how Pete has helped the heavy duty side of our continuing education program grow!
Just like every week, we spotlight news that we found most interesting on the interesting. When prompted by Wes, Pete brings up when he shared on facebook about the 6 month maintenance he does on his 75 ton rotator. He was shocked because fb friends, etc were shocked in how he did his check up on "Big Girl" As he stated "If you take care of her, she will take care of you". He received responses of "What kind of grease are you using..." He was most shocked because many claimed they never thought of doing it that way... Many just add grease on top of grease and don't actually climb through the truck and inspect the wells. Here is the steps Pete mentions he does in his 6 month checkup on his 75 ton...
